Don’t Make These Hosting Mistakes!

We serve many customers and see many situations plaguing clients out there. Here are a few true-life hosting mistakes our customers tell us they learn from and how to avoid them.

1. Falling For The Price Trap

The call of low hosting prices is like a siren. There are reasonable budget-hosting solutions and there are outrageously low budget hosting almost guaranteed to become a nightmare. If the price makes you wonder how they make money then you can look forward to an extremely slow site or even denial of service because they maxed out the bandwidth. Not good. Trust your instincts stay clear. It costs money to provide quality hosting. Look around and get a good value but expect to spend a reasonable amount of money.

2. Reseller Vs. Direct Hosting Company

Hosting with a reseller is a bad thing. Sometimes a reseller is very salesman but inexperienced especially when it comes to technical support. In those arrangements don't expect decent technical support. The company that owns the servers are usually not interested in end user customer support. This usually happens when the server administrators are bulk sellers who are disconnected from the end customer. Don't put your business web site in an arrangement where the person you call has no ability to control the actual servers.

3. Site backups and Disaster Plan

This happens far too often. When a customer’s site went down indefinitely, they were stuck. They could’t put the site with another host because they didn't have any backups of their own. They would have to start from scratch, which would be just as bad because the site was rather mature. Always keep your own backups or pay your web manager to make off site backups and have a disaster plan.

4. Secure Web Logs

Your successful web site needs to have secure visitor logs. many hosting companies routinely scan visitor logs looking for trends they can exploit. Don't have your successful business sabotaged by your hosting company. If you are suddenly facing competition on the web that looks suspiciously like someone moving in on your success it may just be your web host setting up a copy cat business. You need to know who your web host is and their ethical standards.

5. Trusting your host to have the latest software

Internet crime is and viruses are more prevalent than ever. New software or the latest versions are meant to plug security holes. A customer had their site hacked twice in 2 months only to find out the host was not up to date with their software. Check with the host before you order what versions they are running and how often they make updates.
